Quantum Physics Becomes a Game: the Contribution of CNR-INO Researchers
August 26, 2025A new dynamical system, named Ginoux–Meucci–Chua, has been recently proposed to describe — within a single mathematical framework — the continuous transition between two fundamental behaviors of nonlinear dynamics: the relaxation oscillations of the Van der Pol model and the celebrated double-scroll chaotic attractor of Chua’s circuit.
Published in IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I, the work involves CNR-INO emeritus researcher Riccardo Meucci (Optica Fellow 2025), together with Jean-Marc Ginoux, Roberto Concas, Eugenio Pugliese, and Leon O. Chua—one of the world’s leading experts in nonlinear circuits, a pioneer in chaos theory, and the conceptual originator of the memristor.
The proposed system is described by a set of three ordinary differential equations with a single cubic nonlinearity. To validate the model, an electronic circuit was designed to faithfully reproduce the theoretical behavior, analyzed through SPICE simulations and physically implemented on an FPAA (Field-Programmable Analog Array) platform.
The Ginoux–Meucci–Chua model emerges as a new paradigm for memristive circuits, offering a minimal yet powerful platform to explore dynamic transitions between order and chaos. This versatility opens new application perspectives in:
– Neuromorphic circuits, thanks to the ability to generate rich dynamics and internal memories characteristic of neuronal processes
– Chaotic cryptography, where the controllable transition to chaos can be leveraged to produce complex and unpredictable signals useful for secure communications.
This research represents a significant international contribution in the field of complex systems and emerging technologies, confirming the central role of Italian research — and CNR in particular — in the study of nonlinear dynamics and the innovation of advanced analog circuits.
