November 11, 2023Quantum physics. Research published in “Science Advances” demonstrates that it is possible to certify the properties of integrated optical devices
The world of quantum physics continuously and rapidly evolves. This is also demonstrated by studies aimed at developing reliable methods for certifying and identifying quantum resources.
The National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI) supports a line of research whose results have just been published in the prestigious journal Science Advances.
The team of international researchers has collaborated for years to find an innovative system for quantum certification. The scientific synergy involved researchers from the Sapienza University of Rome, the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology of the National Research Council of Milan (Cnr-Ifn), the Polytechnic University of Milan and the International Laboratory of Iberian Nanotechnology (INL).
It is the first experimental application capable of quantifying the computational resources provided by quantum mechanics in optical devices. Furthermore, the techniques developed by the team’s researchers allow the quantum advantage to be verified in practical applications. One of them is quantum imaging, a system that allows obtaining a resolution quality that overcomes the limits of classical optics and finds application in various fields of metrology and sensors.
