This paper is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Tito Arecchi, who passed away of age 87 on February 15, 2021.
The authors revised the model of the laser with feedback which has been for many years a reference point for the chaotic instabilities in lasers [1986]. Although the model has its origin in laser physics, it belongs to the class of the three-dimensional paradigmatic nonlinear oscillator models giving chaos. The Authors have in fact demonstrated the key role of a cubic nonlinearity of the type xz^2, where x is the laser output intensity and z is the feedback variable. In this way, the revisited model possesses the same potentialities
of other well-known paradigmatic models as the Lorenz’s [1963],Chua’s [1984], Chen’s [2002],Roessler’s [1976] and other simple three-dimensional systems reported in literature.
