Abstract: The ASI SCIEF project will provide the refinement of the scientific objectives and the observation requirements of the FORUM (Far-infrared-Outgoing-Radiation Understanding and Monitoring) mission, which was submitted in 2017 in response to the ESA Earth Explorer Mission 9 (EE-9) Call.

The activity includes both some sensitivity studies on the radiative effects of water vapour and clouds, to better assess the exact contribution of the additional information provided by the innovative spectral coverage of the
far IR, and some prototyping activity to improve the space readiness of the most critical components
of the main FTS instrument, i.e the blackbody reference sources and the interferometric unit.

On the base these trade-off studies, possible mission scenarios and the feasibility of the mission, also in synergy with analogous initiatives at an international level in particular with the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group at the Department of Physics, Imperial College London; the NASA Langley Research Center, and the Luleå Technical University, Sweden, will be evaluated.
