Abstract: The chaotic behavior of the output radiation of a CO2 laser with intracavity saturable absorber (LSA) is investigated, theoretically as well as experimentally, through the topological properties of the related 3D phase space flow of the system. By examining the unstable periodic orbits, we can reconstruct the topological organisation (links) of these orbits and show that, in some cases, the topological entropy of the flow is positive, i.e., the flow is chaotic. A comparison with return-time return maps analysis is also performed.
