The presence of quantized vortices represents one of the most spectacular evidences of superfluidity. A new real-time imaging technique was developed at the ultracold gases laboratory of the BEC Center in Trento. Such a technique allowed to study the 3D dynamics of single vortex filaments in a Bose-Einstein condensate, observing both the orbital motion around the center and the gyroscopic motion about the BEC symmetry axis [ PRA 96, 053605 (2017) – Editors’ Suggestion, Synopsis in Physics ]. Furthermore, new and unexpected three-dimensional interaction mechanisms between vortices, at the basis of quantum turbulence, have been identified [ PRX 7, 021031 (2017) ].
