Prof. Stefan Wabnitz, University of Brescia and INO associate, has been awarded a 2016 ERC Advanced Grant for the project “STEMS–Spatiotemporal multimode complex optical systems”. STEMS will explore aspects and consequences of the new effect of self-cleaning of spatial beams in multimode nonlinear optical fibres, recently discovered by prof. Wabnitz and his collaborators at the Universities of Limoges and Dijon. This new effect will be at the basis of a technological breakthrough, which allows for the delivery of high energy laser pulses by multimode fibers, with a much higher beam quality than what it has been possible until now. Among the main applications of this technology, medical diagnostics and the restoration of cultural heritage.
