Recently published on Nature Scientific Reports a new technique, based on Mid Infrared Digital Holography, for remote monitoring the oscillation modes of large engineering structures. The technique developed in collaboration between INO-CNR of Florence and the Earth Sciences Department of Florence University, is able to record, in real-time, the building micrometric oscillations and to determine their amplitude and frequency. These measurements are crucial to evaluate seismic risk and the effects of underground works in cities. The technique, currently under patent evaluation, constitues a breakthrough advance with respect to the existing techniques allowing reduced measurement times and reduced employment of human resources.
