Phase control of chaotic dynamical systems is a well known technique allowing conversion from chaos to periodic behavior and viceversa. This tehcnique has been implemented at INO Firenze and tested, during the last two decades, on several dynamical systems. The novelty contained in this paper, published on Physical Review Letters, is related to the fact that the optimal control strategy is obtained when applied to the underlying potential. From the experimental point of view, a new indicator able to discriminate, in real time, chaotic and periodic solutions has been introduced. The experimental results have been compared with numerical simulations based on advanced computational techniques. This work is a collaboration between INO Firenze, Ospedale San Raffaele di Milano and Universidade Federal da Paraíba(João Pessoa, Brazil).
