The dimensionality of a physical system bears a profound influence on its properties. By employing ultracold atoms, we have engineered mixtures whose components live in different dimensionality and we observed their interactions. We report on the experimental investigation of the collisions between 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional atoms, the latter being confined on a plane. Peculiar scattering resonances, caused by the confinement of one component, are found.
Particles living in different dimensionality and nonetheless interacting are of interest in other physical domains, first and foremost in Cosmology.
