In a recent publication on Optics Express (https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.501602), a compact handheld device, based on Short Wave IR Digital Holography, was tested, in a real fire scenario, for imaging targets completely hidden by smoke and flames. Such a device could be integrated in modern rescue and emergency equipment to help firefighters in safely exploring the operating fire environment and detecting human beings.
