Abstract: The measurements obtained by SAFIRE-A, an instrument (Spectroscopy of the Atmosphere using Far Infrared Emission) used during the APE-GAIA (airborne polar experiment geophysica aircraft in Antartica, Ushuaia, Argentina, 15th September 15th October, 1999) campaign are discussed. SAFIRE-A is a far infrared Fourier transform (FT) spectrometer operating onboard the M55 Geophysica stratospheric aircraft. The volume mixing ratio (VMR) measurements of the ozone-related chemical species are retrieved from each limb-scanning sequence by means of a data inversion process. An assessment of the instrument\’s performance in view of its use in the planned M55-Geophysica activities for ENVISAT validation is also described.
