Abstract: We report the observation of oscillatory and chaotic instabilities on a fluid layer with a free surface, heated from below. The system is driven in a bidimensional state by a spatial modulation of the heat flux on the free surface. For increasing temperature gradients the system yields oscillations periodic in time, initially at a frequency of 8 mHz, then with a second frequency lower by a ratio 30 and eventually with an aperiodic behaviour corresponding to the onset of turbulent regime. The oscillatory regions are localized in space.
