Abstract: We investigated optogalvanic stabilization of CO2 lasers using a low pressure external discharge. Heterodyning against a 4.3 μm fluorescene stabilized laser shows an optimum frequency stability of 70 kHz over five minutes. Discharge pressure and current effects on the frequency reproducibility are investigated. A direct frequency measurement of an optogalvanic Lamb-dip stabilized sequence band laser is reported with an improvement by a factor of three on the previous measurement
