Abstract: In a bistable absorber part of the high transmission branch becomes unstable if mode-mode coupling due to propagation effects is taken into account. As a consequence the transmitted light either precipitates to the low transmission branch or exhibits self-pulsing which can appear discontinuously as a first order phase transition. Thus the system works as a device which transforms cw light into pulse radiation.
