Abstract: We present a method to measure the cavity length variations of a broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. The method is based on the observation of an inhomogeneous nonlinear response of the system under coherent optical injection. Due to the presence of a cavity resonance frequency gradient in the system, the boundary of a modulational instability manifests itself as a separation of the device in two distinct spatial regions. The observation of the position of this boundary depending on parameters reveals the degree of homogeneity of the sample and allows a direct measurement of the spatial variations of the cavity resonance frequency.
