Abstract: The principle of propagation of light rays in a glass cylinder is the base of the technology of optical fibers. The fabrication of an optical fiber requires a coating (fiber cladding), whose refractive index is lower than that of the central part (fiber core). This coating isolates the single fiber, allows the packaging of several adjacent fibers and avoids losses or energy transfers from one fiber to another. The number of reflections that a light ray undergoes between fiber cylinder entrance and exit, as the angle of acceptance can be calculated using simple geometrical considerations.
