Abstract: Adults of the littoral isopod Tylos europaeus were tested in a confined environment to evaluate the effect of spectral filtering on their capacity for celestial orientation, both with vision of the sun and with the sun screened from view. The interposition of filters (clear glass, blue and orange) influences the capacity to assume the correct (sea-land) escape direction: the orientation ability gradually decreases as the wavelengths increase. However T. europaeus seems still to be able to use the sun for compass orientation at λ ≥ 550 nm. The greatest effect is achieved with the sun screened. T. europaeus seems also to use a celestial orienting factor perceived in the UV-blue range.
